Today we’re heading to the countryside to take a look a truly unique home.  The Palouse Residence in the northwestern United States is a modern take on the region’s historical farmhouse design; it’s a curious construction as it’s neither modern nor traditional, but rather a blend of the two.

The architects, Uptic Studios, have succeeded in creating a home that is striking and memorable while still blending seamlessly with its surroundings. Let’s take a look…

The best design barn none

Surveying the home as a whole it has an undeniably barn-like appearance thanks to its shape, wooden beams and red colour. This adds to the home’s charm, and allows it to blend with the surrounding landscape.

The beautiful landscape surrounding the home has not been wasted either! Those phenomenal windows ensure panoramic views of countryside from within.

One with nature

Unsurprisingly, inside we find a home with unparalleled natural light that streams through the glass walls at the home’s entrance, as well as the well-spaced windows throughout the rest of the dwelling. The extent to which glass has been used in the construction all but removes the barrier between the home’s interior and its surroundings; incorporating the scenery into the home’s design.

The abundance of wood visible throughout the interior further contributes to the effect by giving the home a very natural feel.

Space to spare

Inside there’s an astonishing amount of space thanks to the high ceilings and sparse placement of furniture. The vast ground floor of the home contains only a very modest dining table, a comfortable leather sofa, a coffee table and a few extra chairs; the interior is deliberately sparse in order to direct attention to the rolling hills beyond the expansive windows.

The kitchen steels the show

Continuing on through the open-plan ground floor of the home brings us to a sublime modern kitchen of stainless steel white goods and accessories. The wooden beams and ceiling, as well as the potted plants scattered around provide the home with a natural feel that blends with the sleek modern design.

Due to its location under the stairs the kitchen doesn’t benefit from the same high ceilings and natural light as the living room space, however, the area is still extremely well-lit thanks to an abundance of spotlights overhead.

Stairing at the view

Finally we find ourselves atop the staircase, and it’s only really from this elevated position that we can truly appreciate the impact of the home’s design and the power of the surrounding scenery.  The grandeur of the space borders on theatrical, thanks in part to the stage-style spotlights that hang overhead.

If you enjoyed touring this transcendent take on a traditional farm house, then continue on and read about this rustic home on the English Riviera; like the Palouse Residence, it blends together old and new to produce a truly stunning property.
