Creating your own decor is one of the best parts of being a homeowner.  It's one of the few activities that doesn't necessarily have to be dependent upon the size of your home or your budget, and yet the possibilities are endless. In today's world, as almost everything is mass-produced on a monumental scale, finding unique and personalized decor is harder to come by.  Sure, finding local boutiques and artisans is one way of solving the problem – but another way is to create your own!

You should understand that almost any home textile you are willing to buy can more than likely be made at home – and if you like something but wish it looked a little different, or had a different colour scheme – then look no further than your own two hands! From wool and pom-poms to reupholstering your own second-hand finds – do some research, tap into your imagination and start creating the most unique gifts for your home that money certainly can't buy.

Upholstered Furniture

We will be honest – one of the hardest items on this DIY list is reupholstering your own furniture. It takes time, a lot of effort and depending on which materials and fabrics you choose, can also cost a sufficient amount of money. Now, these things all sound negative – however, when done correctly, the results can truly be breathtaking.

You can either choose to reupholster pre-existing furniture you're no longer attracted to – or do what a lot of people do and purchase used furniture for the purpose of restoring it! Both options are cost-effective and can truly bring life back into pieces that would otherwise be thrown out.

There are several ways to reupholster everything from sofas to chairs and even headboards for your bedroom – and there are many ways to reupholster without any sewing! As seen in this example – try something different while reupholstering – add decorative and unique buttons, or make specific folds in the fabric – we promise, it's the little details that count!

Carpet/Rugs

Carpet and decorative rugs can be some of the most expensive items in any given room.  Depending on how large and wide your space is, choosing the rug you want can really over-extend almost anyone's budget. It is almost always cheaper to make your own rug for any room!

Pictured here we have the newly popular, circular pom-pom rug – which can easily be created with wool pom-poms being sewn tightly together.  Of course, pom-pom rugs aren't the only option, but between their bound tightness and wool material, they are durable with anything you might trudge in, as well as warm during winter months.

If you're looking for something more traditional, large, or patterned then go to your local fabric store and pick swatches that are similar to mass-produced rugs you've seen. After you've selected your swatches choose a proper backing for the rug to give it some thickness and comfortability. In exterior areas we suggest sisal or hemp-based backing as it does well with most seasonal changes and wetness. For indoor rugs, choose wool or cotton backing, or for safety, choose a backing that will provide some stability and attachment to the floor. You can either seek advice from a local sewing and craft store, or online searches for step-by-step tutorials of how to create your very own first rug!

Cushions

Cushions and pillows might be one of the easiest items on this list today! Hand made cushions are great because you can control the size, texture, colour and even fullness – so all of the product is you! Whether you're looking for bed, sofa, or accessory cushions, their simple design and sewing technique is one that is perfect even for complete beginners.

As you won't need a lot of fabric or stuffing, cushions are an incredibly cost-effective way to make certain areas or furniture pop! The example we showed here proves just how much punch one pillow can bring to a space if you choose unique textures and bold colours.  For an extra dramatic setting, make pillows in all different shapes, sizes and colours as to mix things up and provide a unique setting for any guests.  It's true when they say you can never have enough pillows – as they are a functional decorative accessory that can be incredibly comfortable as well!

Curtains

You might be surprised to learn that quite a lot of homeowners and interior designers will simply make their own curtains and window sheers to accomplish the look they want. Why? Because it is so simple!  Curtains are a perfect accessory in that they can be beautiful, dramatic and incredibly functional to almost every room in your home.

Sure, buying curtains is always an option too, but if you've chosen unique fabrics or interior decorating tactics, then perhaps it will be difficult to find window furnishings that work with your design concept.  If this is the case, simply make your own.  Grab fabric swatches – both solid and patterned – from a local fabric store and choose a swatch that compliments even the slightest colours in your bedding or interior furnishings.

For a more dramatic feel, drop the length of the curtains five to ten centimeters longer than the wall, so they lay nicely on the floor without being too much of a disruption.  Also, for added blockage from the sun, continue to layer your hand made curtains until you get the desired level of sun protection!

Look for that extra wow factor? Grab beaded robe or any kind of ties to pull the curtains to the side during daylight hours, as seen in this example!

Wall Hangings

One of our most favorite DIY textile ideas are unique and funky wall hangings.  Increasing in popularity over the last year or so, wall hangings have returned from their popularity decades ago, but now they're even cooler! There are an abundance of image and video tutorials online that show you how to create almost any shape, colour and size you want – and the best part is that any imperfections will more than likely go unnoticed, or even add to the look! It is a rare chance indeed when one can make mistakes and have it be to their advantage!

We suggest using wool, either thick or thin, depending on the look your want – and obviously the colour palette you choose is solely up to you!  Another idea is that for the connecting stick that wall hangings hang from – think about using natural materials such as bamboo or even a medium-sized twig from your own backyard! The opportunities are truly endless!

Table Cloths

Now we're down to the last one! Hand made table cloths are wonderful in that the craft and necessity of them has endured a true test of time. We have noticed in recent years that table cloths have slowed down in popularity – however, they are still a nice and functional gesture for when you're entertaining and you should consider that while preparing to make one.

Have a look through your place settings and chinaware – pick out colours and hues that they all might have in common and choose fabric swatches that will match and provide some sort of continuity.  Due to the fact that table cloths are so easy to make, we suggest making one for every season – that way entertaining is easier when thinking about your tablescape! Again, step-by-step image tutorials, as well as video tutorials are abundant online – and it is even possible to design your very own table cloth without any sewing!
