Yoga helps to restore and maintain the harmonious balance in our bodies, and creating a space for yoga at home creates an oasis of calm in the house. One way to motivate yourself to do yoga at home is to create a special space for it. The best thing about yoga is its simplicity, actually it doesn't really require much except for a mat and some space. However, creating a pleasant, calming environment to practice yoga helps you get into it.

Having a yoga space at home means there's no need to make a dash for the yoga studio and create unnecessary stress. It also means that there's a welcoming, calming space that's always there in your home, which can be a great relief in times of stress. The yoga space can also be a space for meditation or relaxation. Once we are in the habit of doing yoga in our special yoga space, we will learn subconsciously through conditioning that the particular space creates feelings of calmness, and we can always go back to this physical space when we are feeling unsettled or stressed.

Let's browse through some of these tips on how to create a yoga space at home and be inspired.

Choosing a yoga space

A yoga space can be created almost anywhere – in the garden, in the living room, in the bedroom, or even in a walk-in closet. Essentially, a yoga space requires a clear, tranquil open space with a yoga mat.

If you have the liberty or luxury of creating a yoga space in your garden, then this might be the best place you can find. Open spaces surrounded by greenery with a hard floor and some shade would be ideal for creating a yoga space. This gazebo in the garden would make a perfect place for a yoga space outdoors. If you don't have an outdoor space you can utilize for yoga,  then opt for a room with plenty of natural light instead.

Use calm colors

Wherever you choose for your yoga space to be, make sure that you are surrounded by calm colors that will help you to relax. Cool and invigorating colors like green and white are excellent. Earthy hues and warmer colors can also work well, but stay away from anything too loud and bright as it can be distracting and not very relaxing.

Mirrors

If you don't want your yoga space or room looking like a gym, avoid full length mirrors that cover the whole wall, instead opt for unique ethnic inspired long mirrors like this one.

Using mirrors in a yoga space can help you improve your yoga postures as you can then observe yourself. Mirrors also create the illusion of a bigger space, which is great for a yoga space as it should give you a feeling of openness and peacefulness.

Inspiring decor

Simplicity is key when it comes to yoga spaces, and although it is a good idea to keep decorations to the bare minimum, some inspiring decor can liven up a space and make it more inviting.

Be careful not to clutter the space with decor though. The yoga space should always be clutter free in order to create a clear and calm state of mind. Choose wisely and sparingly when it comes to decor for the yoga space. Try to think of something that inspires you and helps you feel relaxed. Decorate with intention.

Soft lighting

Set the mood for your yoga space with soft lighting. Lighting can have a big impact on your well-being and state of mind, so it should not be underestimated. Soft lighting makes us feel calm and peaceful and can help us relax into a yoga state of mind.

Scented candles

Sometimes, it's the small things like scented candles which can create the desired effect for a yoga space. Lighting up scented candles can almost instantaneously create a serene ambiance and feelings of calm. The candles also add the fire element to the space, which creates a more holistic and enriching environment.

Another alternative is incense sticks. Many people opt for incense sticks because it's hard to find scented candles with those fragrances, and incense sticks create a more traditional feel. To add to the traditional look, if that's what you're going for, you can also use traditional oil lamps or deepas.

Soften the walls

Soften the walls by using artistically designed rugs to create a soft texture on the walls, evoking a sense of gentleness and tranquility in the space. While a hard floor without any rugs is best for a yoga space, you can make up for the hard floors with soft walls instead.

Another option to soften the yoga space is to use light drapery which can also act as a filter for lighting and create more privacy.
