This remarkable before and after project is the design genius of SUZANNE DE KANTER Architecture & Interiors. They approach each building as unique because every environment is different and implores a different response. The context forms the basis for their architecture. In the same way that they view the intrinsic relationship between site and building, they see the exterior and interior as two interdependent facets of a home. They cannot do without each other, they influence each other, and ultimately they form the holistic unit that is the home.

They strive for balance and harmony, achieved through simplicity, clarity and connection. However, this does not necessitate a rejection of contrast or a healthy dose of creativity. It is their ability to combine rational and novelty, inside and out, light and dark in unique and poetic ways that make their designs special. And this home is no exception. Let's take a look… .

Before: exterior

The exterior, before transformation, showed great promise. The bones are certainly there, however, there is a definite need for rehabilitation. Working with the original structure, the Architects have modernised the home, creating a wonderful expression of contemporary living.

After: exterior

The transformed outer shell is fresh and modern. The exposed timber elements have removed and a new canopy swoops out over the front patio, supported by light-weight steel posts. The bright white exterior is striking and inviting. The central brick element has been finished in a warm grey colour, breaking up the mass of white. It's modern, it's charming, and it's welcoming! What have they done inside…

Before: interior

The interior was in disarray. Building materials were scattered about the floor, walls and ceiling left unfinished. But not for long…

After: Interior

The new living space is open plan and free flowing. The large windows flood light into the bright white space to create a beautiful living environment. Furniture is modern and sleek, but unafraid of colour. In is, in fact, the furniture and furnishing that brings colour into the space.

After: kitchen

Here, we can see that the kitchen is mediated from the rest of the space by this large bookcase. To the living room it serves the function of housing books, while to the kitchen it acts as a storage unit. It is an innovative solution the divides the two functions without disconnecting.
