From time to time, you come across a space that steps out of the box, surprising you with its unique and novel approach. Today on homify, we will explore such an apartment. A series of unexpected details unfold at every turn.

It comprises a meagre 57 square metres; but, what is even more interesting is that, in its former state, the apartment stood at only 34 square meters of used space!

The renovation project was carried out by talented architects, Christiane Bergesch. Incorporating all that unused space, the revamped design is more fluid and comfortable, with the additional advantage of a brand new balcony!

Peppered with bright colours and interesting details, this vibrant home is like no other. Let's take a look…

The kitchen

With a glass ceiling – literal, not metaphorical – the kitchen is bright and airy. Natural light is crucial is small spaces, and can make your tiny apartment feel open and spacious. The design is elegant; it's minimal, yet rich in materiality. The timber cabinetry is combined with concrete, stone, stainless steel, and mirrors.

A second kitchen

But, that's not all – there's a second kitchen area, too. This one is equally minimal with its all-white, handleless cabinetry. The timber feature along the back wall contrasts the smooth and regular surface of the cabinetry with varied hues and textures.

The bathroom

The bathroom has a similar look – contemporary and sleek with strong materiality. The white vanity and basin have sharp lines and a rational design, while, the large mirror bounces light around the space, making it appear larger than it is. All in all, they have crafted a fantastic bathroom in a small space.

The stair

Believe it or not, even though this apartment only covers 57 square meters of space, it is located over two levels. The concrete stair that leads down to the basement is modern and edgy. Guided by a stainless steel handrail and feature lighting, one makes their way down to the cave-like living area.

The living space

The concrete stair forms a strong visual feature in the room, almost sculptural, its underbelly exposed. It's not the only exposed and textural material in the space – a timber feature wall is an anchor for the wall-hung television and sumptuous materials are used for the floor rug and furnishings. The stools- covered in vibrant fabrics – interrupt the subdued material and colour palette, injecting a playful personality into the room
