Kitchens are not only a practical necessity in a house, they also offer a wealth of opportunity to add in some seriously personal style touches and one element that is always given a lot of thought is how the walls are finished. Traditionally, paint, tiles and glass splashbacks are the most common wall fixtures in UK kitchens, but there is another option that is starting to take off in a big way; wallpaper for kitchen spaces.

Kitchen wallpaper ideas are becoming wonderfully varied, but it's vital that certain elements are taken into account, such as:

- Ease of cleaning. Kitchen wallpaper will be prone to the odd splash and spill, which is why the paper itself needs to be able to withstand a scrub. For this reason, standard wallpaper simply isn't suitable.

- Resistance to moisture. With steam and condensation being real issues in every kitchen, wallpaper needs to be able to stand up to excessive water, otherwise it will peel off as quickly as it went up.

- Complementary styling. Wallpaper need to work with the kitchen cabinets that have been installed, otherwise the end result will be jarring and too unusual to work.

We've created this guide to suggest some fantastic aesthetic finishes for kitchen wallpaper that will work in any style of home. From industrial through to traditional motifs, all of the following looks would be fantastic, when printed on proper kitchen wallpaper.

Geometric kitchen wallpaper.

This is a very contemporary and on-trend kitchen wallpaper design to consider, but geometric repetitive patterns are well worth some thought. Pretty and intrinsically connected to the ever-popular Scandinavian interior design aesthetic, geometric patterns add some funky finishes, yet work very well with understated colours.

When working with bold kitchen wallpaper patterns, it can be a little more sensible to opt for muted tones, which is why the grey and white design here is so lovely. Adding just enough diversity into an otherwise very plain space, it allows for a grey dining bench seat to be seamlessly integrated as well. Absolutely beautiful, eye-catching and yet elegant enough to never date; what a magical combination.

Floral kitchen wallpaper.

Wallpapered kitchens can have a really charming and old fashioned feel to them, which is why classic floral designs are just right, especially for either older properties or those that are situated rurally. Naturally reminiscent of homely country kitchens, floral or chintzy motifs offer a wonderful backdrop for shabby chic furniture items and traditional Shaker style cabinets.

Wallpapering kitchen walls with floral designs might not sound very on-trend, but when something is classic, it simply transcends fads and fashions and florals will always have a place in heritage homes, at the very least!

Brick-effect kitchen wallpaper.

We know that this kitchen has actual exposed bricks on display, but the look is so super, it's got to be worth considering hanging brick-effect wallpaper. After all, hanging a couple of rolls of kitchen wallpaper will definitely be simpler than stripping plater, cleaning bricks and then sealing the whole lot! If nothing else, it will certainly be a lot less dusty.

Brick-effect wallpaper for kitchen walls is a fantastic idea, as it will allow for that rustic meets industrial vibe that so many homeowners seem keen to embrace, but with minimal hassle and cost. Not only that; there are plenty of variations on the exposed brick theme to explore, from whitewashed through to sandstone and everything in-between.

Novelty kitchen wallpaper.

A wallpaper backsplash really isn't a great idea, given the fact that, by their very nature, backsplashes are in constant contact with water. Instead of installing novelty designs behind the taps, a lot of homeowners are now hanging fantastically fun wallpaper on adjoining walls. Food and drink themes are becoming a lot more freely available and, given that they are so eye-catching, it is possible to use them, behind a pane of glass, to jazz up a boring splashback area, if it really can't be resisted.

The finished look that this dramatic black and cork-print wallpaper has created is absolutely incredible and really proves that novelty or themed prints don't have to be 'naff'. They can just be a bit of fun that really perks up a perfunctory room.

Wood-effect kitchen wallpaper.

Similarly to the brick-effect that we discussed earlier, we know that this picture shows actual wood cladding, not clever wallpaper, but it does give an impression of how incredible a wood-effect modern kitchen wallpaper could look, in situ.

A perfect feature wall idea in an otherwise understated or very minimalist kitchen, wood-effect wallpaper comes in every conceivable style, with shabby chic, painted or natural varieties all very easy to come by. Thanks to the natural lines of wood cladding, it would be very easy to hang with a seamless and almost undetectable finish as well.

Greenery-effect kitchen wallpaper.

For a fresh, interesting and cheerful feature wall in a kitchen, some people are investing in green walls, but the only problem is, they take a lot of looking after. That's why some clever homeowners are either installing faux plants or getting the look from printed wallpaper.

We can think of few things nicer than a green wall-effect wallpaper in a busy kitchen space, to encourage a little mindfulness, meditation and calm. Let's be honest; plants work well with anything, so there would be no concerns about the paper not matching the cabinets either.

Focal point kitchen wallpaper.

Not all kitchen wallpaper installations have to cover a full wall, as a simple yet striking focal point can be created on one singular surface, such as this chocolate bar cabinet. Perfect for adding just a small slice of personal style, while sticking rigidly to a logical theme, this is a really fun idea that could lend itself to lots of applications.

This has us thinking about other food stuffs that would look brilliant, up on the wall. What about wallpaper covered in lemon slices? That would certainly zing up a room.
