Less is more! But ever wondered how can less be more if the less we are talking about is the size of the space? The common challenge that we urban dwellers face in our urban homes are the space crunch. Less space means less space for our garden too. The green space is the necessity of time. Small or big, we need a garden to relax and rejuvenate. Our garden in city homes can usually be created in small space available in the front yard, back yard or the narrow space on the sides of the bungalows. If it is apartments or even in bungalows, we try to convert the balcony or portico into a beautiful garden. However, no matter how much you are in love with greenery, you have to be careful while designing the garden in small space. Here comes the theory of ‘less is more’. Cramming too much of garden elements in a small space will only cause chaos and clutter. But don’t get disheartened. With your imagination and a little help from us you can create magnificent garden looking much bigger than its actual size. Have a look and learn some simple tricks to make the small garden spaciously grand.

1. Think, plan and create

When the space is small, a careful planning becomes a priority. Think what you need the most in your garden. Is it beautiful flowering plants or small kitchen garden? It could be a playground for your kids or a small swimming or splash pool for the family. Once you have decided on the most important aspect of your garden, make it your priority and plan rest of the garden around it. You can also think of hiring a landscape architect or garden planner. The professionals can make your vision a reality in the most efficient manner.

2. Define and create a distinct area

A clear vision can make impossible possible. Give depth to the small garden by defining the boundary and creating distinct area within the limited space. Evaluate the garden space and then decide what you actually want there. Simple garden features like sitting area, lawn, deck, planters, boundary wall… with proper planning everything could fit into a small garden and even add depth into it making it a visually attractive and appealing.

3. Greenery on the wall

A high wall in small space looks dominating and restrictive. It makes the space feel even smaller than it actually is. However, the power of green can easily overpower this visual domination and beautify the wall. Green climbers with its leafy texture visually connect the plants on the ground with the greenery of the wall giving it a perception of long garden extending to reach the sky. You can have flower bed on the ground or small pots all along the walls; choice is yours.

4. Chasing the curves

A curvy garden will make the small garden look bigger and better. The curves distract the mind and create an illusion of spaciousness thus we hardly notice the narrowness of the garden space. It also becomes something different from normal. In this garden, the curvy lawn is accentuated by pergola and planters and a few big trees adorning the sides. You can use the pergola and transform it into a green cave.

5. Green corridor

If your garden is the enclosed corridor or balcony of your home, take advantage of the walls and fences and convert it into a green zone. Use pots and planters filled with plants of all shapes and sizes, hang the pots, put the grills behind the greenery and create a green canopy. It creates an illusion of multiple layers of space within a small area. Now just put garden chairs and enjoy your green sojourn.

6. Flowing with the circular shape

Opt for circular table for your garden and prepare yourself for round table gossips with family and friends. Circular table efficiently maximize the space in comparison to rectangular or square tables. It is more convenient too to sit around the table and can squeeze in more people without crowding it. Also the lack of edges in round table prevents any mishaps or accidents while taking a walk in the garden.

7. De-clutter to enjoy

Inside or outside, clutter can only create chaos. So if the small balcony of your house doubles up to be a garden, de-clutter it and make it sensational. There is immense beauty hidden in simplicity. Make it simple, keep the furniture simple and arrange the pots along the walls and fence. Use flowering plants to bring in colour into the space. If the view from the balcony is as breadth taking as here in the picture, install transparent fence all along and welcome the greenery home.

8. Connecting inside from outside

Break the wall and let the garden enter the home. Use the niches, floor, stones, pebbles and your imagination to build a beautiful and peaceful garden right inside your home. Since there is no visual obstruction in the form of wall the garden though occupying just a corner of the home, it will look huge.
