1. Laundry

Wash your laundry with cold water instead of hot water. Also avoid using the dryer, and hang up your clothes to dry instead. This two simple steps will save a lot of energy as the most amount of  energy consumed by the washing machine and dryer is used for heating up the water and the air. For tips on how to maintain a washing machine, please read our article titled make your washing machine last forever.

2. Fridge and freezer

Always keep your fridge and freezer full to reduce the amount of energy being consumed. Fill it up with bottles of water, if you have to. However, be careful not to overcrowd the fridge, and leave some space for air circulation or the fridge will have to work harder to keep cool.

Seals on the fridge often wear out after sometime and seals which are not tight will lose a lot of cool air and therefore the fridge will end up taking up more energy than usual. To test if the seal is tight enough, try inserting a piece of paper in the door, if the piece of paper stays then the seal is tight enough. Otherwise, the seal should be repaired, but If it is a really old fridge, we highly recommend getting a new one instead because old fridges consume much more electricity compared to new fridges. 3. Dishwasher

Most modern dishwashers have an energy-saving cycle, so learn how to use it. You can also save electricity on the dishwasher by choosing not to use the dryer. Just open the door after the dishes have been washed, and let the dishes dry themselves. For more information, please also read energy efficient approaches for a greener home.

4. Ovens

Ovens take up a lot of electricity, but using a toaster oven instead of a regular oven can cut your electricity bills by half. Another tip is to avoid opening the oven to check on the food all the time as this wastes a lot of energy and heat. Just look through the window to see if the food is doing alright. Furthermore the timer on the oven should be quite efficient in making sure the food doesn't get burned. For more ideas like this, you can also read our weekly tips to save money around the house.

5. Air-conditioning

Learning how to use the right settings on your air-conditioner can save you some money on electricity bills. For example, use the fan setting in addition to the air-conditioning to cool down the room using less electricity. Also make sure the vents are pointed in the right direction, and not towards a wall or a window. All ventilation holes and windows should also be sealed tightly in order to prevent cool air from escaping.
