Natural aesthetics have an inherent appeal. For thousands of years our ancestors lived in ways that were quite closely connected to nature. Nowadays, nature relaxes us and helps to keep us feeling grounded. When it comes to designing interior spaces, promoting natural qualities in the home will help make it feel more secure, tranquil, and inviting.

Of course there are many ways and degrees to which you can incorporate natural elements into the space. There are many age-old adages and proverbs about the benefits of syncing ourselves to natural rhythms and to respect the wisdom found in the outdoors. The same can certainly be said for matters of interior design. From opting for raw, unadulterated materials from nature to simply cultivating a colour scheme done in earth tones, virtually any style can be enhanced with a little inspiration from nature. Here are some of our favourite ways to bring nature into your home!

Incorporate raw wood

It’s not secret that wood adds warmth and hominess to a space. Stained wooden furniture and mahogany will help cultivate a sumptuous and regal air in the space. Meanwhile, orange-hued hardwood flooring makes a room more inviting and cheerful. Classic wooden parquetry is undeniably elegant. One way to give the home a more natural appeal with wood is by going raw.

There are plenty of ways do bring this material into the space. You could go with a dining table or kitchen fronts made from rustic wood that still bears its natural etchings. Alternatively, you could add wood that’s still in log form, albeit only partially. Halved logs can make for interesting steps on your staircase, for instance. If you’d like to make a strong statement with your nature inspired décor, you could also go with a raw wooden coffee table like the one in this living room by Helô Marques Associados.

Woven wicker

If you want to cultivate a more oceanic feel in your home, there are specific ways to do that as well. After all, nature is quite diverse in its expressions. One of our favourite ways to add a bit of seaside appeal to your interior is with the help of woven wicker furniture.

Wicker was originally made from swamp grasses and ocean reeds in Egypt, and was considered to be quite luxurious in this ancient society. Today wicker is commonly used to create outdoor furniture, but its uses are not limited to this. For example, we love the look of this antique wicker stool inside this sunroom. In conjunction with the plants and the natural light, the pale wicker adds to the ethereal atmosphere found in the space.

Natural materials

While raw wood and wicker made of sea reeds work well to make the home feel earthier, the kinds of materials available for you to incorporate into your interiors are far broader than this. Another common route to go is to bring in some bamboo furniture. Often this furniture is made from bamboo pulls in their raw state so you can be sure to get an earthy, tropical effect when you situate a piece of bamboo furniture within a given room.

Beyond furnishings, you can do a lot with nature inspired décor. A woven basket or straw wreath like the one featured above brings a natural touch to the space. Flowers, fresh or dried, can add colour to your interior. Even stringing pinecones and hanging them like a garland on the wall is an option. In fact, we encourage you to go on a walk or hike in a favourite place in nature and collect the items that inspire you.

Environmentally sustainable items

We imagine that you not only want to create a nature inspired interior because this style of décor interests you. Instead, we wager that you’re looking to achieve this look at home because you care about the earth and feel connected to it. One way to combine the desire for a nature inspired interior with an expression of care towards mother earth is to choose environmentally sustainable items for your home.

These are decorations and products that have been sourced sustainably and cultivated with the least amount of harm to the environment. They are typically made of renewable resources and are often recyclable or biodegradable in and of themselves. It is a good habit to discern the source of the products you consume in terms of food, clothing, and even furniture and decoration. A little bit of awareness can go a long way in building a healthier planet.

Earth tones are a must

Naturally (no pun intended), earthen tones are ideal for creating a space that’s grounded and organic. Earth tones can be soothing or rugged depending on the types of textures you choose. Common earth tones include sage green, a range of browns, lavender, cream colours, deep reds, and indigos. Typically an earth tone is any colour that is commonly found in nature, especially those in forests, grasslands or mountainous regions.

With such a large colour palette to choose from, it is quite easy to find earth tones that fit your decorative preferences. This room for instance, is a mix of warm toned wood, eggshell white, and sage accents. The sky is literally the limit in terms of colour options, so have fun with this part! Combining an earthy colour scheme with a plant or two can help compound the level of natural inspiration and cohesiveness.

Put some plants into the look

Of course, nothing will say nature inspired like bringing some living, breathing (yes, plants breathe) organic materials into the mix. Cultivating a small interior garden is certain to add some earthiness to your home. Plus, plants come in thousands of shapes, colours, and sizes so there is certainly going to be something that’s compatible with the decorative scheme in your interior.

You can mix and match potted plants like we can see in this example to add lushness and colour. You could even plant a sapling inside if you’re willing to alter the flooring in your home. Hanging potted plants on the walls is a great way to utilise the vertical space in your home as well. Finally, you could always start a herb garden in the kitchen. This idea is functional, fragrant, and aesthetically pleasing.
