Change is the only constant and there’s no better proof of it than shifting trends in design. Trends in interior design and architecture change at a slower rate than fashion and are influenced by a number of factors including the economy, the environment, and demographics. These factors influence design in terms of material choices, layouts, construction methods and colours. Sometimes the change in trend is a minor shift, while at other times a change in trend will move in the opposite direction completely. To design a house that will always be on trend is impossible and a very expensive affair. Also, you may not like every changing trend! Thus, when designing a home interior, it is important to be aware of what the current trends are but the focus should be on how the design of your house reflects your personality. Take a look at the top six interior design trends for 2016…

Mix and match

Instead of simply matching materials, colours and finishes, the interior design trends in 2016 are to mix and match. This can be seen especially with metallic finishes where warm metals such as copper and gold are being layered against cool metals like silver. The objective of this mix and match trend is to move away from a staged effect to creating a more comfortable space. When mixing and matching home interiors, layer varied textures, colors, and materials against each other but keep one factor out of the three constant to achieve a cohesive finish. For example, when layering cushions on a sofa, pick soft furnishing in different colours and patterns, but in the same fabric to achieve a harmonious look.

Classic minimalist style

You would think that with rapid modernization, the design trend would be to fill a house with automated equipment. However, to balance industrialization, the trend in interior design is moving towards more a minimal style. The focus of this trend is to have minimal furniture and décor artifacts with simple forms and clean lines. An open floor plan is also often associated with this style.

A Nordic touch

Nordic style is also inspired by nature and hence an easy way of incorporating this trend at home would be to include a palm in your living room décor. Follow it up by decluttering the house and leaving spaces as open as possible.

Keep the white

As the trend in design moves towards the minimal, white becomes an increasingly popular colour. Another reason for its increased popularity is the soothing qualities of white at a time when chaotic events are making headlines all over the world. In home interiors, the beauty of white is that it can be used to cover large expanses as well as to accent feature walls. White also allows architectural features and furniture to take center stage, unlike bold colours. For home interiors, choose warm shades of white such as off white or a creamy white to keep your house from looking clinical. You can also play with textures to add depth to the room.

Recycle the old

Global warming and a rising concern for the environment has made sustainability another important keyword for interior design trends in 2016. As natural materials are given a higher priority than man-made materials, recycling also becomes important. Instead of simply throwing out something old, try and repurpose it. DIY furniture created from recycled objects such as coffee tables made from storage pallets or outdoor stools created using old tires are easy DIY weekend projects. The focus here is to reduce the amount of waste we create. Before buying something new, look at what you have around you and think of creative ways to reuse or reinvent it.

Colour trends

Colours have an important psychological effect on people and hence trends in colour are closely related to global events. The stresses of modern day life and chaos of uncertainty have made pastels a colour to turn towards. Pantone, the world-renowned authority on colour, has chosen rose quartz and serenity as the colours for 2016. These soft pastel shades of pink and blue are warm tones that have a sense of order and peace associated with them. Another reason for pastels to trend is that these colours are not gender specific. This coincides with society moving towards gender equality.

Colours and patterns go hand in hand. Thus, when colours become calmer, prints and motifs also follow suit. Delicate patterns and intricate motifs are taking over from bold and geometric patterns. Motifs in 2016 are also turning towards nature for inspiration.

Key furniture pieces

To complement the minimal style of current design, furniture in 2016 focuses on simple forms and clean lines. Gone are the days of elaborate scrolls and heavy wooden furniture. Visual lightness and organic shapes are keywords when it comes to trendy furniture designs. With sustainability in mind, eco-friendly materials like wood and mixed materials are preferred choices for furniture. When it comes to mixed materials, the combinations can be classic such as marble and wood or more unexpected such as concrete and metals. To balance the minimal décor with technological progress, furniture design in 2016 incorporate technology within it such as tables with built-in charging points. In keeping with compact homes, multifunctional furniture is also gaining popularity.

Another trend that can be seen in 2016 home interiors is indoor/outdoor living. Living rooms are opening up to balconies and gardens while kitchens with an outdoor dining area are now trending. An easy way to do this is by bringing potted plants indoors and using them to decorate your home. Along with being trendy, plants also purify the air and inject tranquility in living spaces. Tabletop gardens and terrariums are another easy way to blend outdoor and indoor spaces.

These trends should be used only as guides when decorating home interiors and be adapted to reflect your lifestyle. After all, a home is an extension of your personality!
