Want a bedroom like the silver screen greats? It's easier than you think, and it doesn't need a Hollywood salary, either.

With a little ingenuity and a couple of key design elements, even the smallest, darkest bedroom can be transformed into a Beverly Hills dream. Intrigued? Check out the five key tips for a 5 star boudoir!

Hit the ceiling

A Hollywood star wouldn't be caught dead in a bedroom with a plain, boring ceiling – no way! If you invest in one thing when redecorating your room, make it this.

Hang a suspended ceiling with art deco lines, and tuck recessed lighting around the outskirts for extra illumination. Add a coloured or mirrored panel as the base for your main light fixture. If you really want to go all-out, old-skool style, hang a decadent chandelier over your bed.

Keep it King-size

Throw that single bed far away – if you want an Oscar-worthy bedroom, the only way forward is to supersize. Purchase the biggest bed you can find, and pray that it will fit into your room. Deck it out with layers of luxurious blankets, sheets, throws and cushions – the more the better. Stick to fabrics like faux fur, silk, satin and velvet for a truly glamorous vibe.

A new bed can be a pricey purchase, but it is an investment that will pay dividends where sleep quality and a reduction of muscle pain are concerned. Many retailers now sell low-cost kingsize beds and mattresses, but if you really want to save big bucks, check online for second hand bargains.

Keep statement pieces minimal – but bold

A superstar's room is never cluttered – they have far too much storage space to let that happen! For a true Hollwood vibe, try not to make the space look too 'lived in'. Keep fuss and frills to a minimum, and let a couple of luxury statement design elements do the talking.

This room, for instance, relies on just three stylistic components to make it look chic and expensive. Highly polished wood panelled walls, recessed ceiling lighting and a huge, minimal bed scream opulence without looking tacky or garish.

When in doubt, tone it down

Of course, you could look further into the past for your Hollywood bedroom inspiration and take your cue from the silver screen goddesses of the 40's and 50's. Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe all would have loved this monochrome palace.

It's all about mixing up the textures. A wall of shiny, cold mirrors, a sleek faux fur floor rug, buttersoft leather armchairs and a sumptuous padded bed give the room depth and interest. Don't forget to include a poster of your on-screen icon, either – remember what you're aiming for!

Awe-inspiring art deco

No Hollywood boudoir would be complete without the inclusion of an art deco element, and what could be better than a full-length mirrored vanity? This one has enough drawers to safely store jewelry, toiletries, and small personal effects – and it even has a sink when one needs to freshen up discreetly.

Mirrored art deco pieces are guaranteed to give your room a little bit of extra star sheen – and not just because they help to bounce natural light around the room! Although statement pieces of this kind are often expensive, small art deco ornaments and tables can often be found at very reasonable prices.

Hollywood opulence is usually considered to be the preserve of a select few privileged people. Don't let that put you off – with a little bit of creativity, anyone can transform their bedroom into a luxurious den. Want more glamour? Check out this opulent and detailed interior!
